Find a spiritual director.

You can find a spiritual director through directories such as ESDA, SDI or the Order of the Common Life. Spiritual directors are also often able to make referrals if they don’t have availability or aren’t necessarily the best fit for you.

‘The first thing that genuine spiritual direction requires ... is a normal, spontaneous human relationship.’

—Thomas Merton

What to expect

I like to meet once informally (and at no charge) before we make any commitment so I can learn about you and you can get a feel for me. You’ll find me a very nondirective spiritual director. I find my most helpful role is to open up the space, listen and ask questions, to simply midwife what God is already doing in you.

In a typical meeting, I begin by praying briefly for you and for our time, that it be guided by the Holy Spirit and God’s love for you, and by inviting you to hold some silence for us. You control the length of it and how you use it. When you’re ready, we begin wherever you’d like. I listen, ask questions, encourage you and help us follow the thread.

When we’re close to 60 minutes, we wind down our conversation—or our prayer—wherever the time finds us, and I pray for you, just as I will throughout the month until our next meeting.

Meet a spiritual director.

An intro conversation with a spiritual director doesn’t cost anything and comes with zero commitment. Let’s find a time to talk about where you find yourself and what you’re desiring. I can answer any questions you might have about spiritual direction and help you look at what the next steps might be—whether that’s with me, someone in my referral network or someone else.

Please note: Due to limited availability, I’m referring out most requests to trusted colleagues, including Jeff Doeringer, n.OCL for spiritual direction and Vanya Seletzky, MSW, LSW for Internal Family Systems Therapy. Please feel welcome to contact me for any additional referrals.

Spiritual direction is not meant for crisis care. For urgent crisis care, please use the 1-800-662-4357 mental health and addiction hotline, the 800-273-8255 suicide prevention line, or text “HOME” to 741741. For spiritual crisis care, please consider reaching out to a local clergy member with whom you experience safety; they should be able to make a referral if needed or provide helpful counsel.
